Perdonen a quienes deban hacerlo.
Earthquake in Peru: To think
Most of us know that on the 15th of August, around 6:30 pm, an earthquake of 7,9 degrees Richter scale took place in Peru, affecting many cities like Lima, Ica, Chincha, Cañete and Pisco where the most destruction occurred.
This terrible news has saddened our nation, as images of destruction arrive from small towns which no longer stand. People mourning their families on the streets. People that have been left helpless, without a roof over their heads to protect them. But people that, in spite of the family that they may have lost, put it all behind to help those in need around them. Such courageous people.
There are people who haven’t had water or food in days, and who desperately seek help for them, and most importantly, for their children. There is also fear about many men who escaped prison after a wall came down, and who protected by the dark of night, went on to sack the few things that were left among the wreckage that the earthquake left behind.
We see many faces flooded in tears asking for help in desperate shouts. People trying hard to understand why this has happened to them. Children sleeping outside, in the cold humid winter. Hundreds of people, fighting to receive a bottle of water, urged by hunger, who have been left with a void in their hearts, very difficult to fill.
But among pain and desperation, somehow human beings have always found a way to move on, looking into the future with hope and knowledge that everything can be better.
This kind of situation always makes us stop for a minute and turn our eyes on ourselves, to reflect on our lives and our choices. To discover that this time of crisis can also be a time of renovation and rebirth, the beginning of a new life.
From where I stand, I’m amazed to see how this disaster has brought to the surface the very best of our hearts. Not only of the people of Peru, but also of other nations. It’s overwhelming to see that inside of all of us there is a major source of Love and Life.
It is a powerful force that united through solidarity, prayer and reflection can make of us one whole spirit that will reconstruct and bring new life.
To those of us who have to watch this happening from a distance, save in our homes with our families, and lucky enough to understand why these things may happen, I urge you to ponder on how delicate, and infinitely wise and powerful this life is. Fall in love with it, and with each wonderful thing that may present it self before you, no matter how small. Embrace your kids and scatter around the best of your lives for others. Forgive who you must forgive, and live in harmony, for no one knows when despair and solitude may come knocking on our doors.
This is the call that my spirit wants to make on you, and I do it with the best of intentions. I’m sure each will know what to do with it.
